July  2010

Dear Friends of the Drawbridge Puppets:

HAPPY  SUMMER!  We hope that you are having a fantastic, safe and fun summer season :)

Have you heard the wonderful news?  The Drawbridge Puppet Theater has been named among the top 1,000 'Great Places in Massachusetts' by the Great Places in Massachusetts Commission. The Drawbridge Puppets Theater was among those chosen from over 12,000 nominated places across the Commonwealth. The entire list can be viewed on the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism’s website at:

http://www.massvacation.com/1000/index2.php

The 1,000 Great Places Commission was created by the Massachusetts State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick in 2009. Its mission is to identify and recognize the 1,000 most truly special places in the Commonwealth, in order to celebrate pride in our history and culture, increase knowledge of our natural surroundings, and encourage regional and international tourism.

The program is administered through a partnership of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development; the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and its regional tourism councils; and the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC).

The Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT) is the state agency dedicated to promoting Massachusetts as a leisure-travel destination in order to stimulate the Massachusetts economy by generating state and local tax revenues, creating jobs, and supporting the growth of travel-related businesses.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council is a state agency that promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

THANK YOU MOTT ~ And to all who nominated the Drawbridge Puppet Theater ~ We are honored to have been chosen and very appreciative.

Also private birthday and field trip events.  View our new Birthday Banquet Room - The theater now has a separate room for birthday party and other functions.  It is a very nice, clean space perfect for your next party.
Visit soon as the spring flowers in our "Enchanted Gardens" are absolutely beautiful.  The Gardens are open all the time, and no admission is charged to enter them!  Just bring a picnic and enjoy what nature has to offer!  Ask us to show you 'Mrs. Robin' as she is building her nest right outside the puppet theater window.

Have you seen our new website devoted to the memory of Whalom Park?  It is an interactive map filled with photograph's, video's, memories and more!  Folks from the area will certainly remember that visiting Whalom Park, at least once a year was a tradition for most families.  Enjoying the day relaxing in the pine tree picnic groves, riding the wonderful carousel, the Tumble-Bug, Roto-Jet, Turnpike rides and of course the 'Flyer-Comet' Roller Coaster.  Playing the Whalom miniature golf course and other games of skill and lights, being thrilled by the numerous circus and musical acts that appeared regularly at the center stage and the Ballroom.

There was even an opera and theater company in the early days which presented top notch plays and musicals at the famous Whalom Playhouse.  Everyone remembers the Whalom mascots, Silly Savage, Super Chick and Simon Looney Bear who posed for pictures and gave you a hug when you were little.  Just enjoying the company of families and friends away from the computers, and the busy, bustling lifestyles we seem to have grown accustomed to.

It was truly a wonderful amusement park in its day, and sadly, like many other smaller amusement parks, found it necessary to close as the Mega-Parks and Water Parks became increasingly popular.  Whalom Park closed after it's 108th season in 2000.  One by one the rides were sold, as well as small buildings, game machines etc.  In 2005 a developer purchased the land and demolition of all the existing buildings began, which included all of the beautiful old trees on the land.  Today, a typical condominium complex is being constructed.

For all of our Drawbridge Puppet patrons, please know that Whalom Park was the location where the the Drawbridge Puppet Theater began.  You can visit the little puppet theater in 'Kiddieland" and the "Starshine Marionette Theater" which were both designed and shows were held daily by your puppeteer, Paul L'Ecuyer. luckily, we are still part of the tradition of allowing families to join together in moments of quality entertainment and relaxation in our 'Enchanted Garden's" (which are now open.)
